FAQ
Q: What kinds of print projects have you worked on?
A: I've directly overseen the printing, cutting and binding of booklets and magazines. I've designed and printed everything from tax forms to menus to admission wristbands to strange little marketing cards with little steel rings punched through them. I've managed print jobs with variable data such as customer addresses and company names. I've also worked with representatives of other companies when products had to be produced off-site.
Q: What about digital projects?
A: I've done all kinds of work, from banner ads to bus schedules to video editing. I've been working on websites since 1996, back when I was convincing Chameleon to agree with my dial-up modem. My most recent work has been for the promotion of indie books and works of WebLit and web fiction.
Q: How fast of a learner are you?
A: I'm fast. I'm good at intuitively figuring out new software interfaces and I know how to troubleshoot. I pick up new work methods quickly and am used to learning programming languages as I work. During a project I often think of new things to integrate (such as a new menu function or a recently released Drupal module) and so tend to have to learn it all on the go.
Q: Are you a self-starter?
A: Yes. I've managed projects enough projects on my own and added enough impetus to others to have a feel for how to get things going and keep them going. This is especially important with freelance projects.
Q: Are you organized and detail-oriented?
A: I'm so organized that I can actually see my desktop wallpaper instead of an expanse of icons. I'm so detail-obsessed that I get aggravated when images are saved at the wrong level of JPEG compression. I pay particular attention to keeping my spelling and grammar correct - it's an important part of being professional.
Q: We're looking for someone in your field with your skills, but you don't have a skill listed that is necessary for the position we're trying to fill.
A: Ask me about it - I might not have mentioned it on this page yet. I've been in several different fields of design, and some skills I'm used to being assumed in certain lines of work. I can't be sure of what each different employer is looking for until I speak with them. I've also learned so many different kinds of software by now that it's difficult to list them all without getting too long-winded, and I like to keep the resume brief.
Q: I understand you're Erica, but who is Irk?
A: Irk is my nickname from days of old - I've had it for so long that it's become part of my online identity. It's stuck for so long because whenever I join a new community, online or off, there is invariably another Erica, but never another Irk.
Q: Is this a Drupal page?
A: Yup!
Q: ...What is Drupal?
A: Drupal is a content management system. It's big and hefty, and has a lot of PHP in it, which is pronounced "pahuppah". See here for more information.
Q: Did you do this Drupal theme yourself?
A: Yes. This theme is all my own work. It's actually my first Drupal theme... so be gentle.
